Candy painted po'traits are our latest hyperfixation.
I use the word "po'Trait" to talk about my work as part of the creative labor of folks of poverty class. And the ways my creative labor is not aligned with or centered on the arts industrial complex/academia/ non-profit industry, but rather finds its home at the margins. Lifted up, not by institutions of ytSupremacy, but rather by our Black, Queer and Disabled communities.
These po'Traits are painted in limited palettes made up of the bright colors (candy paint) found in Black, Southern car culture. When we love something, we give it COLOR! And I love my Peoples!

The cloudscapes are are borne from my spirituality and search for meaning.
They come directly from our practice of rooftop stretches, meditations and attempts to connect to the Natural World, while being surrounded by /mired in the cold callousness of The City.
These works directly confront what it means to find God in what often feels like the Godless urban conditions of late stage capitalism.

In 2020, I began painting in earnest. After decades as a performance artist, costume designer, milliner and filmmaker I needed to switch genres if I was to have any hope of staying creative in a post-COVID world.
I decided to try out visual art and painting.
I've always preferred to look at abstract painting and so that's where I wanted to start. And what was accessible to me was affordable craft paints, and a very welcoming community of artist's painting using gravity/ centrifugal force and sheer audacity.
I mention this here because pur art/spin art/ zentangles/doodles/puncil drawing etc are some of the most accessible ways folks begin their explorations into visual art.
Just because it's accessible doesn't mean it lacks value. Pour painting taught me composition, color theory and helped me get comfortable working with canvas and paint. And I really enjoyed the spontaneity of that style of painting. If you're curious about pour painting/spin art give it a try! It a great way to begin to explore painting.
